Can Anyone Learn Lucid Dreaming?

A lot of people ask me, can anyone learn lucid dreaming?

Most of these people are eager to learn themselves, but are concerned they won’t be able to because they’ve never had a lucid dream before.

So, do you need to be naturally gifted to learn lucid dreaming?

In my National Australian Lucid Dream Induction Study (NALDIS), I investigated this question directly to see if natural “baseline” lucid dreaming rates were important for learning lucid dreaming.

The good news is, the findings showed that you don’t need to be naturally gifted or experienced to learn lucid dreaming!

Results from the ILDIS showed that the natural baseline rate of lucid dreaming in Week 1 of the study (when participants kept a dream journal but didn't do any technqiues) had very little to do with the success rate when participants practised lucid dreaming techniques in Week 2 of the study.

I also found that the success rate for learning to have lucid dreams had nothing to do with whether the participants had ever practised a lucid dreaming technique before, or how frequently they had practised lucid dreaming techniques prior to the study.

More recently, I have replicated these same findings in my larger International Lucid Dream Induction Study (ILDIS).

The strongest predictor of lucid dreaming success in both studies was general dream recall, which is the amount of content you can recall from your dreams in the morning. Fortunately, there are many techniques for increasing your general dream recall, even if you find it hard to remember your dreams.

So, if you’ve ever hesitated to try learning lucid dreaming, you no longer need to worry that you won’t be able to due to lack of natural ability or experience!

Warm regards,

Dr. Denholm Aspy
